Bluffton Middle School
BLUFFTON MIDDLE SCHOOL
Beaufort County School District | Bluffton, South Carolina
PROJECT NARRATIVE
The new Bluffton Middle School campus serves approximately 1,100 students in a high growth area of the county. The school is situated between two arterial roads on a unique site. Complex issues that were addressed through the design included traffic network improvements for the area, jurisdictional wetlands mitigation, seismic considerations, and sustainability features. A new connector road joins existing roads surrounding the site to lessen the impact of traffic in the area. Additionally, jurisdictional wetlands followed a separate, extensive process while design moved forward. Classroom wings and community spaces are oriented to capture natural daylight to minimize energy consumption. Large overhangs with brackets help shade the major elements from direct sunlight while introducing daylighting in the classrooms.
