Bowen’s Corner Elementary School
BOWEN’S CORNER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Berkeley County School District | Hanahan, South Carolina
PROJECT NARRATIVE
Located in a growing area of Berkeley County, the new Bowen’s Corner Elementary School is designed on a 21 acre site in the city of Hanahan, South Carolina. The site improvements included widening of the access road with a “boulevard” entrance to the school for bus loop and car drop-off/pick-up. The project was developed through multiple community meetings to address pedestrian access, traffic mitigation, and point-use with recreational fields.
This new facility has a distinct front entrance located on the new boulevard, as well as an additional entrance for student pick-up/drop-off with secure access and control. The large multi-purpose and dining areas are located near the bus loop to facilitate dismissal and after-school community use.
Due to unique site features, the building is more compact in nature. All academic classrooms from Pre-K to 1st grade are located on the first floor and 2nd through 5th grade classrooms are located on the second floor. The building’s exterior is brick with sloped roofs designed to incorporate ample daylight into the building, with a large courtyard in the rear for secure play areas. The project was completed in August of 2018.
